About Gloucestershire

The physical geography of Gloucestershire consists of three main features, one of which, the Severn Vale, divides the county on a roughly north east south west line. West of the Vale lies the high ground of the ancient Forest of Dean. To the east, rising dramatically in a beautiful wooded escarpment, are the famous Cotswold Hills. Three very different regions, but each with it's own attractions and unique landscape interests for the walker to enjoy. Forest trails, riverside walks, open rolling hills and picturesque golden villages are all on offer in glorious Gloucestershire. Much of the Cotswold Hills are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and many of the towns are exceptionally attractive. The elegant Regency Cheltenham Spa and lovely Cirencester with it's rich history as an important Roman and wealthy wool town should not be missed by the visitor; and many great walks can be planned from both towns. Gloucestershire covers an area approximately 70 miles long and about 40 miles wide. Five major rivers run through the county and they are the Severn, Wye, Frome or Stroud, and the two Avons. Historically Gloucestershire has cropped wheat, barley and turnips, and dairy-farming was important. Manufactured goods produced here have included woollen cloths, hats, leather, wire, pins, brass, edge-tools and paper.

Musically famous as the birthcounty of the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire. It is a county of extremes; from Gloucestershire, the farming county of the Royals to industrial Gloucester with its historic docks and connection with the aircraft industry in The Gloucester Aircraft Company and Dowty Aviation. Strong folk dance traditions are alive in the area and some of the very up market venues are ideal places for string quartets and other classical music. Including the Forest of Dean with its jazz traditions, and sophisticated Cheltenham and the Cotswolds with its corporate entertainment and partying, there is always lots of music happening in and around Gloucestershire.

party bands and function bands are popular in Gloucestershire's Cheltenham Spa and in the Cotswold villages, as are covers bands Some superb jazz bands and barn dance bands, live and work in the 'Forest' and Cheltenham areas of Gloucestershire

Haydn and Mozart wrote many of their string quartets for Royal patrons. Hear our string quartets in gloucestershire playing the same music for you as was played to Royalty.
