Hamble

This centre for yachting on the Hamble River is popular among summer visitors who come to watch the splendid array of yachts on the river—and to sample the local crab and lobster dishes. Hamble was a landing point for Saxon, Danish and French invaders. A fragment remains of the 12th-century priory, built by the Benedictines, which William of Wykcham rebuilt as a parish church in the 13th century.

Beaulieu

This small, attractive village near the head of the Beaulieu River is better known today for Lord Montagu's Motor Museum than for the abbey which it adjoins. The abbey was built by King John and destroyed by Henry VIII. The gatehouse, rebuilt in 1872 and now called Palace House, is Lord Montagu's home. The refectory of the abbey has been rebuilt as a parish church, and the lay dormitory is now a restaurant.

The Montagu Motor Museum was founded by Lord Montagu in 1952 in memory of his father, the 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, a pioneer motorist. The museum contains more than 200 vintage and veteran cars—a 'veteran' must have been built before 1919 while vintage cars date from 1919 to 1930—as well as cycles and motor cycles.

Hatchet Gate, i mile west, is a pleasant picnic spot beside a deep pond and former mill house, now a private residence. To the south extends the lonely expanse of Beaulieu Heath.

The Bournemouth Symphon Orchestra,   which   has   a world-wid reputation, plays in the Winter Garde! Less than 200 years ago, the valley which Bournemouth is situated was wilderness  of unused  common  land between the already nourishing boroughs of Christchurch and Poole.

Bucklers Hard

A tiny village, on the lower reaches of the Beaulieu River, which through being near to the New Forest's plentiful supplies of oak, was a shipbuilding centre, founded by John, Duke of Montagu, until the igth century. Huge stacks of timber used to stand for weathering in the unusually wide main street. The Master Builder's House Hotel was once the home of Henry Adams, who built ships for Nelson. There is a maritime museum, and some attractive Georgian cottages line the street that leads down to the river. Trips on the river can be made from the small landing stage.

Bucklers Hard became a shipbuilding centre in the i8th century, as it was near to the plentiful supplies of oak in the New Forest. The yards employed 4000 men and built 40 of the ships which fought under Nelson in the Napoleonic war

The Agamemnon, which Nelson called his favourite ship, was built at Bucklers Hard in 1781. The painting of her in action in the Mediterranean in 1794 is by Nicholas Pocock; it hangs in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich

wooded setting. The ico-ft cliffs which circle the bay add to its charm and shelter the promenades and garden walks below them.

Christchurch

Behind Christchurch Quay stands the splendid priory church, its structure a blend of styles from Saxon times to the Renaissance. Its choir stalls are older than those in Westminster Abbey, and there is a monument to the poet Shelley. The town has the remains of a Norman house and castle, and the Red House Museum contains exhibits drawn from the geology and wildlife of the area. A 2-mile walk towards Bournemouth leads to Hengistbury Head, an observation point for bird migrations.
