Vowchurch

This village with its stone bridge across the River Dore lies in the centre ot the Golden Valley. The valley's name is thought to be due to a misunderstanding by the Normans, who translated dm\ the Welsh for water, as d'nr, the French for 'golden'. The 14th-century parish church has a fine Jacobean screen and an unusual root, supported by oak posts within the building instead of by the walls. Just across the river at Turnastone is another attractive church with a Norman doorway. A narrow road leads westwards from Turnastone, past half-timbered farmhouses, into the hills with their marvellous views of the Golden Vallev.

Bromyard

A market town rich in old houses, notably the half-timbered Falcon Inn. Lower Brockhampton manor, 2-j miles east of Bromyard, is the sort of building which1 tells much about the way our medieval ancestors lived. It is a stout, timber-framed house built for a squire's family, with latticed windows, tilting timbers and a picturesque buckled roof of fine old tiles. It has a gallery in the dining-hall. The gatehouse over the moat was built in the isth century and is especially well preserved.

Kington

A small market town, set in pleasant hill country, where big autumn sales of Clun Forest and Kerry sheep are held. It is the essence of a border town, where visitors can still sec the earthworks of Oftas Dyke, the defence wall between England and Wales built in the 8th century by King Oft'a of Mercia. There is good hill walking, with lovely views from Hergest Ridge and Bradnor Hill. Hergest Croft Gardens are rich in trees and shrubs and have a rainbow display of a/.aleas and rhododendrons in summer. The golf course has views across to the Black Mountains, Radnor Forest and the Malvern Hills.

Ledbury

England's small market towns can sometimes be as pretty and more engaging than its villages, and Ledbury, greatly loved by poets, is such a place. The Brownings and Wordsworth used to visit Ledbury; John Masefield was born there and said that the Hereford scene had a profound influence on his work. Ledbury has changed little over the centuries, and the October Hiring Fair is still held in the streets, although it is not now for hiring men, but simply a festival. The town is still as Masefield described it—'pleasant to the sight, fair and half-timbered houses black and white'. One of the most attractive buildings, inside and out, is the 16th-century Feathers Inn, and there is an atcaded 17th-century market hall supported on pillars of chestnut.

Ledbury is almost equidistant from Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester, and is set among pastures and streams, making it a good base for walking the Malvern Hills. In the fields around Ledbury, tiny wild daffodils grow; and behind windbreak hedges are Herefordshire's extensive hop gardens—second only to Kent in production. The igth-century Eastnor Castle near by contains art treasures and is surrounded by a beautiful park.
