Charity Fundraising Barn Dance The JF Ceilidh/Barn Dance Band ref: 6004.1

Ramsbury is a picturesque village on a wide stretch of the River Kennet. The river (lows through the park of Ramsbury Manor, built in 1680 by John Webb, the son-in-law of Inigo Jones. It was in this house that Cromwell laid his plans for the subjugation of Ireland. The town has many Jacobean and Georgian buildings, and an impressive parish church with Anglo-Saxon foundations

65th Birthday Party The CW Ceilidh/ Barndance Band ref: 4987.1

William Cobbett, in his Rural Rides published in 1830, was attracted to Pewseyand  the Vale of Pewsey's 'villages, hamlets, large farms, towers, steeples, fields, meadows, orchards and very fine timber trees scattered over the valley'. Little has changed since Cobbett's day in the green valley of which Pewsey is the centre. Pewsey has a mixture of Wiltshire thatched cottages and Georgian houses, and at the crossroads a statue of King Alfred looks across the River Avon. Attractive villages surround the town, arid prehistoric barrows line the high southern escarpment of the Marl-borough Downs to the north.

40th Birthday The JF Ceilidh/Barn Dance Band ref: 6004.2

Salisbury, or New Sarum, built at the meeting-point of four river valleys and sheltered by downland, is one of the most beautiful cathedral cities in Britain. The first bishops laid out the town in the 13th century on a simple grid pattern, which has adapted well to the needs of modern traffic. The cathedral spire is the graceful centrepiece of a unified city in which buildings of all styles blend harmoniously —from medieval gabled houses, historic inns and market-places to stately pedimented Georgian houses and even a modern shopping centre.

Salisbury was founded in 1220 when Bishop Richard Poore abandoned the Norman cathedral built on the fortified hill of Old Sarum because it lacked a good water supply, and began to build a new cathedral about 2 miles south on flat, well-watered meadowland.

The site of the new building was called 'New Sarum'. The cathedral is the only English medieval cathedral largely conceived and executed in a single style, rather than piecemeal over the centuries. Except for part of the tower and the spire, it is entirely Early English Gothic. The building was finished c. 1280, but the magnificent spire, at 404 ft the tallest in England, was not part of the original plan; it was added in 1334.

Columns of Purbeck stone appear dramatically throughout the cathedral's rich, spacious interior and there are many impressive tombs and monuments. In the north transept is a dial-less clock that dates from 1326 and is probably the oldest mechanism in working order in Britain. The miniature fan-vaulted roof in the grilled Audley Chantry is exquisitely designed, with ancient roundels, or decorative medallions, clearly visible in the high vaulting of the choir. The cloisters are the largest of any English cathedral, and the library over the East Walk contains one of the four original copies of Magna Carta.

The Medieval Hall, Sarum St. Michael, West Walk, Cathedral Close, Salisbury, Wiltshire. , SP1 2EY, Wiltshire

the Medieval Hall dates from the middle of the 13th century, and is part of a beautiful complex of buildings around the cathedral. Cathedrals were places where music was important, and not only the cathedral but the buildings around it will have resonated with music through the centuries, so putting on a ceilidh here is most appropriate. For weddings and dinners where our string quartet is booked to play, there is a minstrel's gallery, meaning that with the excellent acoustics of the room and the gallery elevating the musicians above the guests, everyone can hear the music well without being overpowered by it.

Live music hired for Wedding - Olivia and Andrew The SH Irish Folk Band ref: 4490.2

Andover is a market town which declined in importance when railways replaced stage coaches. Later the motor car cluttered its streets; today a bypass has siphoned off much of the through traffic, but the town is renewing its life as the centre of one of London's 'overspill' schemes. There are several old inns, and relics of Iron Age encampments on the surrounding hills. Just south of the town there is scenic beauty along the little valley where the Pillhill Brook runs into the Anton, a tributary of the Test. Harewood Forest, 2 miles east, is crossed by numerous footpaths.

Wilton was once the capital of Saxon Wessex. The town's market-place has a severe yet pleasing early 18th-century market house. On one side a series of graceful, ruined arches leads to a compact Gothic church, restored by a former United States Ambassador in 1937 in memory of his namesake and ancestor, Robert Bingham, who was consecrated bishop here in 1229.

Wilton House, home of the Earls of Pembroke, stands on the site of an abbey founded by Alfred the Great. Much of the house was destroyed by fire in 1647, but it was reconstructed by Indigo Jones and his son-in-law John Webb. It contains a collection of paintings and furniture, as well as 7000 model soldiers. It is also noted for its elegant Double Cube Room, 60 ft long, 30 ft wide and 30 ft high. The park has fine cedars.

Village Barn Dance The WS Ceilidh / Barn Dance Band ref: 4343

Great Wishford has some charming steeply roofed cottages, some dating from 1628, cluster around the parish church in the Wylyc Valley. Built into the east wall of the churchyard is a record of the price of bread since 1800.

To the south and west of the village are the forest downlands of Grovely Wood. Villagers keep up old customs. They exercise their ancient right to collect free firewood from Grovely Wood, and they dance on the lawns of Salisbury Cathedral every Oak Apple Day (May 29). They also lay oak boughs before the altar of the cathedral.

Amesbury is a  town set in a bend of the River Avon, which is crossed by a five-arched bridge built in Palladian style. Amesbury Abbey is built on the site of the priory to which, according to Thomas Mallory, Queen Guinevere withdrew when she heard of King Arthur's death. West of the Avon, on the border of Amesbury Park, are the outlines of prehistoric earthworks which are named Vespasian's Camp after the Roman Emperor, but date from a much earlier age. The large military and R.A.F. camps near Ames-bury include the important experimental flying base of Boscombe Down, where new aircraft are tested.
