Stratford upon Avon Town Hall.Sheep Street Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 6EF, Warwickshire, West Midlands

as you would expect in Stratford-upon-Avon, this place is all, yes really old. It was built in the reign of Charles I, and was more or less blown up in a gunpowder explosion in 1643. Very careless. So it isn't really that old because it had to be pulled down after that little mishap, but as with local authority happenings, it took a nod hundred years to pull it down and rebuild. This still pretty old, and it was updated in 1863, as Victorians were want to do, so that you have the building that you see now.

The   countryside   round   Stratford-upon-Avon seems a world apart from the urban centres of the Midlands, and untouched by time. Much of its character is formed by the River Avon, edged with willows and flowing in a broad, peaceful valley through pasturelands where cattle graze. Mirrored by the water are the mighty battlements of Warwick Castle and the towers of humble village churches.

At Stratford-upon-Avon the swans gather round the arches of Clopton Bridge, and the view from the bridge of Holy Trinity Church in its riverside setting is one of the best-known in Britain. Boats can be hired, and the views from the water offer a different perspective of the town. Further downstream the river makes a broad loop round Welford-on-Avon and runs through Bidford-on-Avon, before crossing the border into Hereford and Worcester.

Little now remains of the great Forest of Arden of Shakespeare's day, but there are wooded walks and many quiet picnic spots on the river bank, not far from the places associated with Shakespeare's life. The

what a wonderful place for guitarists to perform. I spent many a delightful evening in Spain, in tapas bars. I guess is the equivalent of the English pub, and has a similar powerful and special character. I'm not meaning that the character of the English pub and the tapas bar in any way similar, though maybe on second thoughts there is a similarity in their purpose, but 1 million miles away from each other in their actual feel. Where the English pub might have its darts match, or folk group performing, the tapas bar as it allows talk in Spanish guitarist flamenco guitarist depending on the area of Spain you're in. But this is Warwickshire, Stratford-upon-Avon no less. So you get the best of both worlds, the wonderful pubs of the town, and this wonderful tapas bar.

The village is only a mile west of thi centre   of  Stratford-upon-Avon,   an. Anne   Hathaway's   cottage   is   clearl signposted. The 'cottage' is in fact thatched house of 12 rooms. The sectioin of the house furthest from the road was badly damaged by fire in late 1969, but it has now been fully restored. In the parlour is the uncomfortable narrow bench, or settle, where Shakespeare is thought to have courted his future bride. In spring and summer the typically English cottage gardens are ablaze with flowers, including some fine roses.

Stratford-upon-Avon is an old market town, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, has become one of the world's most famous tourist centres. From April to October it attracts thousands of visitors who come here to trace the poet's life from cradle to grave.

Stratford is best explored on foot, and the main centres of interest can be seen in a walk taking about two hours. From Shakespeare's birthplace, a half-timbered early 16th-century building in Henley Street, the route runs down Bridge Street to Clopton Bridge, built in the i,th century by Hugh Clopton, who became Lord Mayor of London and who built New Place in Chapel Street. From the bridge a road on the west bank passes the red-brick Royal Shakespeare Theatre, built in 1932.

The theatre gardens run down to the river bank. On the south side, a gate leads back to Southern Lane and to the tree-lined approach to Holy Trinity Church. This beautiful parish church, overlooking the river, is Shakespeare's burial place. His tomb and those of some of his family are marked by simple engraved stones in tront of the altar.

Not far from the church is Hall's Croft, the home of Shakespeare's daughter, Susanna, who married Dr John Hall. The house has fine Tudor gables and a walled garden. From Hall's Croft, Church Street leads back to the centre of the bustling market town.

Many hotels and shops in Stratford-upon-Avon have been renovated in the accepted half-timbered style, with black beams criss-crossing whitewashed walls. Other buildings, including the properties that belong to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, have been carefully restored to their original colour, with the natural tone of the wood offset by a warm, cream-coloured wash.

A contrast to the Shakespearian emphasis in Stratford-upon-Avon can be found in the Tibor Reich Collection of miniature model cars and the exhibition of textiles and ceramics which are kept on permanent display in a shop at 60 Ely Street.

I love this hotel. It's a spectacular neo-Gothic pile, with lovely stonework. It was owned by the Shirley family, one of Warwickshire's oldest families who apparently can follow their ancestry back for more than 1000 years. Is this really true? That's what claimed anyway. It's had a painful history and was demolished, rebuilt from salvaged material, left to rot, and then brought back to life as this hotel, reputedly haunted, reputedly with staff hearing disembodied voices and sounds, but it was probably one of our string quartets in a room down the corridor. And what a place for a wedding, is pure fairytale. It's a place that needs live music. If you're getting married here, I would say you need are a string quartet or harpist, book a jazz band, hire a ceilidh band or barn dance band, but although I'm obviously biased when I say this, I think it is seriously a place that is majorly enhanced by live music, the wonderful made even more wonderful.

Meriden  village claims that the medieval cross on its village green marks the centre of England. Just west of Meriden is iSth-century Forest Hall, the headquarters of the Woodmen of Arden, one of the oldest archery societies in England. The society was established in 1785, and its membership is restricted to 81 archers. Packington Hall, 2 miles north-west, is surrounded by a 7OO-acre woodland park which has a herd of fallow deer. In the park is the Old Hall, dating from 1679, which incorporates an earlier house visited by Charles I in 1642.

Kenilworth has the dramatic ruins of the great castle stand on a gentle grass slope a short distance from the modern town centre.

The main street of the original town winds away to the left of the main gateway. The castle was a stronghold for lords and kings of England in the nth and 12th centuries, and re-modelled as a palace by John of Gaunt, the fourth son of Edward III, in the i4th century.

The Earl of Leicester entertained Elizabeth I at Kenilworth, but the castle has not been lived in since the Restoration. Its chief points of interest are the remains of the keep, and the pleasure gardens laid out by the Earl of Leicester, the outlines of which are still visible. The great 16th-century northern gatehouse still survives, as does much of John of Gaunt's banqueting hall. The castle is the setting for much of the action in Sir Walter Scott's Kenilaworth.

Royal Show,  Stoneleigh Park,  Warwickshire, , CV8 2LG, Warwickshire, West Midlands

the Royal show no longer happens. There was a particularly disastrous year when it poured with rain and hundreds of cars got stuck in the mud in the field car parks. I don't know if that's what brought it to an end, all my show that in front so many years had come to a stop. I did hear from somebody that there was an organisation that was running agricultural shows around the country, that was competing with shows like this one, and farmers are no longer willing to travel so far to major shows so going to this other organisations events. I don't know if there's any truth in that. I just hope it wasn't how cells support the showed an end!

A number of years we had played in the food hall and the entrance hall of the show. The entrance hall and the flowers behind it really very good place to play, but it wasn't too crowded and people were walking around admiring the flowers in a fairly quiet and contemplative manner. So you could play Haydn string quartet or a Mozart string quartet, and it fitted the beauty of the situation, and people could hear the music wafting around the hall. One year we got asked to play for a while in the food hall, and this wasn't good. In the food hall, people get greedy, want to try every free sample offer and tend to be elbowing each other out of the way and grabbing and gobbling. Not really the environment for playing civilised music with a string quartet, and the noise of jaws and teeth munching and people squealing as they got pushed out of the way by others greedier than themselves, tended to drown the music out.

The last year that we played there, which was the last year the show ran, we played much of the time outdoors in the bandstand. We were alternating with the jazz band who had a PA system. The weather was very changeable, so whilst we could move indoors when shower struck, the jazz band's PA system couldn't be moved. Amazingly, the loudspeakers and mixing desk were not underneath the roof of the bandstand, so when it rained, all this equipment plus the microphones got soaked. Fortunately for the band it wasn't their PA system, it was supplied by some contractor to the event organisers. Quite apart from it being dangerous to have wet, live electronics, it must have destroyed the equipment, so they must have been charging the show organisers and arm and a leg to cover the cost of the ruined equipment, or also was soon going to go out of business as an equipment hire company.

Fortunately for us, playing purely acoustic instruments, two violins a viola and cello, and some of the time a flute violin and cello and viola, we had none of this problem. I recall that Prince Charles and Camilla, and we were asked to play for them. Surprisingly, the next year the show was not put on and the whole thing has never been recovered. A great pity. I really do like agricultural shows.

this is a real traditional sports and social club, with little round tables, stacking chairs, and a sensible size stage with sensible lighting. I think it was this one where I forgot my violin. Yes, would you believe it, I put my fiddle down at the end of the gig while we were clearing away the PA system, thought I'd put it in my instrument case, so not the case, and we all drove home. It wasn't for a couple of days until I opened my case to practice my fiddle, and found it empty, that I realised what had happened. What an idiot! Fortunately, the caretaker had found it, and put it somewhere safe, it was a real nuisance to have to drive over to Kenilworth to collect it. Certainly right.

the 16th century, enormous Manor house in his own 11 acres of grounds. There's a big lake in front of the Manor house, and a patio with tables and umbrellas, so it's rather nice having a string quartet playing outside on the patio during the drinks reception at a wedding, and the hard stonework of the ancient building reflects the sound out towards the lake, so those guests who are wondering along the lakeside can hear the music wafting towards them. This place has everything that you would expect of a venue that puts elegance, history and music together. It's definitely a place for a harpist, a classical guitarist or a string trio or quartet to be playing somewhere and at sometime during the marriage ceremony, the reception of the evening entertainment, the barn dance goes down more as well. If you spent out on booking a venue like this, it doesn't make sense not to hire a live music group to make the atmosphere complete.
