My granny lived in Lowestoft, Norfolk border, but I remember as a young lad being taken into Yarmouth and on the Norfolk Broads. I always went there in the summer, so I thought the sun always shone, and it wasn't until many years later, when I lived in Scotland – which I thought was called part of the world – but I realise that Norfolk and Suffolk could be even colder. I recall driving down to Yarmouth and Lowestoft from Scotland, in January, starting off in deep snow and blizzards, and eventually arriving in Norfolk. No snow, but infinitely colder, colder than I think I've experienced even within the Arctic Circle at -35°. Obviously, it was nowhere near that cold in Norfolk, but it certainly felt it, perhaps it was the wind chill all the humidity, but oh yes it was called. From musician this matters. The number of times I've half frozen to death playing for a wedding in a village church in the winter, willing the fingers to keep moving in the bowing arm not to look up solid. Sometimes it would momentarily, and one got some very strange sounds, probably nobody noticed.

Another introduction to the remote wildness of parts of the county, when I was a junior school reading a book about Cox and Henry Bloggs, lifeboat skipper in Cromer. It wasn't really a junior school book, I think the library had delivered this particular book by mistake, but it fascinated me. This was lifeboat in the days of all is on sale, in the winter on this exposed coast, in shallow waters making the waves even more vicious than would be the case in deeper waters. These weren't sailors singing sea shanties or dancing to sailors on pipe's, these were men fighting for their survival and the survival of others. Tough stuff. But out of this life of hardship and remoteness came a strong tradition of ceilidh and barn dance events and music, holiday towns such as Yarmouth attracted the shows and variety acts, with their own style of music, and now Norwich has its own Philharmonic Orchestra and chorus.

For almost goo years Norwich has been the See of East Anglian bishops, and now it is a cathedral city, county borough, port and industrial centre. It has prospered through the weaving of worsted cloth (named after the village of Worstead, 11 miles northeast of the city) and later by the manufacture of shoes, mustard and chocolate. Norwich is within easy reach of the Broads, the central and southern farmlands and the arc of the north-east Norfolk coast.

The finest view of the city is from Mousehold Heath, a tract of furze and heather much loved by-John Crome, founder, with John Sell Cotman, of the Norwich School of painter. From the heath can be seen the towers of more than 30 medieval parish churches, dominated by the cathedral spire soaring to 315 ft.

There are three attractive approaches to the Cathedral of Holy Trinity. From the predominantly Georgian square of Tombland, named after the

Saxon loom, meaning an open market-place, the way lies either through the ornate 14th-century Ethelbert Gate or else through the 15th century Erpingham Gate, which is ornate with statues and heraldry. The approach from the east is through the Watergate by the River Wensum; joined to the Watergate is a house known as Pull's Ferry, though there is now no ferry.

The cathedral has a superb Norman nave and tower, to which the present stone spire was added in the isth century. In recent years the buttresses, tower .and spire have been extensively restored. Edith Cavell, who was executed in Belgium in 1915 for helping British prisoners to escape from the Germans while she was a nurse in Brussels, is buried below in Life's Green at the eastern end of the cathedral, and there is a bust of her near the Maid's Head Hotel.

The Norman keep of Norwich Castle stands on the most substantial of the city's hills, surrounded by a moat converted into steep, attractive walks and gardens. The castle has a well-organised museum with some imaginative tableaux of historical scenes and Norfolk wildlife. The Norwich School is well represented in the art gallery. Other good museums are the Bridewell, featuring local industries and building methods, and Strangers' Hall (said to be named after the Flemish 'strangers' who settled here to weave in the 16th century), with its rooms furnished in the styles of different periods.

Near Strangers' Hall is the Maddermarket Theatre, reconstructed after the First World War from a chapel and warehouse into a replica of an Elizabethan playhouse, where an adventurous repertory company of amateur actors stages works under professional producers. Cobbled Elm Hill is the best known of the quaint and colourful streets, and at the top is the little Church of St Peter Hungate, rebuilt in 1460, which has been turned into a museum of ecclesiastical treasures from all over Norfolk. St Withburga founded a nunnery at  East Dereham in the 7th century. The unusual town sign spanning the narrow entry to the market-place from the south depicts the legend of two does which, in answer to St Withburga's prayers during a famine, came to the nunnery to give their milk. St Nicholas's Church, partly Norman with a detached 16th-century bell tower, stands on the site of the nunnery. In the churchyard is St Withburga's Well. The melancholic poet William Cowper, who died in 1800, is buried there, with a monument and window to his memory. Bishop Bonner's cottages, named after a 16th-century rector who became Bishop of London, have plasterwork ornamented with flower and fruit designs. The cottages house an archaeological museum. The author George Borrow (1803-81) spent much of his childhood at Dumpling Green, a mile south of East Dereham, in a house now known as Borrow Hall.

Great Yarmouth is a busy summer resort also prospers from frozen-food packaging and from its various supply services to the North Sea gas-drilling rigs. Fairgrounds include a well-planned area for children and there are two piers, cinemas, a model village and indoor and outdoor model railways. South Quay has Elizabethan House, furnished as a merchant's home and open as a museum. Two other museums are Old Merchant's House and the Tolhouse in Tolhouse Street. There is so little left of the old town that the Yarmouth scenes in the 1960, film version of David Cupperfield had to be shot in Southwold to achieve an authentic atmosphere.

The neighbouring town, 3 miles to the north, is Caister-on-Sea, with an extensive sandy shore and the rums of the 15th-century moated castle of Sir John Fastolf, who appears in Shakespeare's Henry VI. The castle has a museum of veteran and vintage cars.

Beccles is a mellow old town is best seen from the River Waveney and tow-paths. Gardens run down to the water, fringed with boat-houses and landing-stages. The 14th-century detached bell-tower of St Michael's Church dominates the meadows. The tower is 97 ft high and has a peal often bells.

The Old Rectory Norwich Rd. Woodton, Bungay, NR35 2LP, Norfolk

The unusual name of Bungay possibly derives from 'bongue', a good ford, or 'le bon eye', a spit of land thrusting out into the river. Castle ruins seep through part of the town as alley walls and fragmentary lumps of masonry, and The White-Lion stands on part of the old fortifications. A fire in 1688 destroyed most of the original houses and melted St Mary's church bells. The most rewarding streets lie beyond the churchyard and above the River Waveney. Bungay . Stone, west of the north porch, is said to be a Druid relic 2000 years old. The butter cross once had a cage in which wrongdoers were exposed to public mockery. The town sign portrays the castle, forked lightning, and a black dog, which may be the Devil or 'Black Shuck', legendary haunter of the marshes here and along the coast.

St Cyriac's is derelict, its empty windows looking into a mess of rubble and even its clawing creeper largely dry and dead, while St Mary's has been admirably restored. Anglesey Abbey, 3 miles south-west beyond Lode, is a 13th-century Augustinian foundation assimilated into a country house. The house and extensive gardens are now run bv the National Trust.

Downham Market is a small, congested market town on a hill from which roads lead out to the scattered Breckland-Fen border villages. Around Stoke Ferry, Southery and Felt-well the 'breck' gives way to black fenland soil. Denver, a mile south of Downham Market, has a tower windmill, and masts of yachts and dinghies rise above the banks of the sluices. This drainage scheme was started by Charles I's Dutch engineer, Vermuyden, in an attempt to bring agricultural prosperity to the area and provide a foundation for a market town to be called Charlemont. Repeated flood-tides ruined the project, but modern drainage techniques are now achieving some success. The vicarage at Denver has a seven-brar decorated chimney. Oxburgh H; miles east, is a magnificent moated dwelling which was owned by one family, the Bedingfelds, for 500 years.

Hunstanton is the largest of the west Norfolk resorts and the only East Anglian seaside town which faces west. There are great stretches of sand, and though the funfair and caravan park are an integral part of the waterfront, they do not disturb the town's essentially Victorian atmosphere. Old Hunstanton, half a mile north, is a residential village with beach huts nestling in the dunes. Holme next the Sea, to the north-east, has a bird observatory, and migrant birds throng the coast in autumn.
