Routes into the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, by road and rail provide two contrasting views of this industrial and commercial centre of the North-East—one modern, one ancient. The main road route, over the New Tyne Bridge, is dominated by a towering office block, while railway passengers over Stephenson's High-Level Bridge see the massive 82 ft keep of the Norman Castle, built in 1172.

One of the best starting-points for exploring the city is the quayside. Steep flights of narrow steps between 17th-century timber warehouses lead into the castle enclosure, the keep and the Black Gate, built c. 1247. Beyond, at the junction of the market streets of Bigg Market, Cloth Market and Groat Market, is the medieval Church of St Nicholas, the fourth-largest parish church in England until it became a cathedral in 1882. Its spires, pinnacles and graceful lantern-tower make it an outstanding landmark.

In Victorian times Newcastle was given one of the finest town centres in England. This was due to the vision and enterprise of a builder, Richard Grainger, an architect, John Dobson, and John Clayton, the town clerk, who cleared away the congested centre of the city in the 1830*8 and built the graceful, broad throughfares of Grey Street and Grainger Street. It was Dobson who designed the impressive Central Railway Station, opened by Queen Victoria in 1850, which covers 17 acres and has 2 miles of platforms.

Equally impressive are the rebuilding projects being carried out today. The busy heart of the city, running from a magnificent new civic centre and the university to the old town hall, has supermarkets, multiple stores, cinemas, night clubs, a new library and the Laing Art Gallery.

For the outdoor enthusiast, the city has almost 1400 acres of open spaces, including the vast expanse of Town Moor to the north-west and the park of Jesmond Dene to the north-east. The surviving stretches of Hadrian's Wall, which once snaked 73 miles across the width of England, start in the outskirts of the city at Denton

Mounds and ditches mark the sites of farts at Rudchester and Halton Chesters; and remains survive at Corbridge—the first fort on the Stanegate, the early Roman road used as the wall's communications artery.

Otterburn is a town that earned itself a place in history with the Battle of Otterburn, fought ij miles to the north-west in August 1388. The battle, commemorated by the Percy Cross, resulted in the death of the Earl of Douglas, leading the victorious Scots against the English. The clash has inspired many ballads and legends, and is recounted in song in 'The Battle of Chevy Chase'. A wool industry survives in the village, and at Otterburn Mill, where a watermill is still in use, visitors can see tweeds being made.

Beyond the broad High Street of fine 15th-century houses in Tynemouth, lie a moat and a ruined gateway leading into the remains of a priory. It was founded in the nth and 12th centuries by Benedictines on the site of a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon monastery destroyed by the Danes in AD 865. The surviving ruins date from the nth and I4th centuries. From the priory there are impressive views of the Tyne Estuary and the coastline, with its fine, sandy beaches.

Steep banks lining the River Tyne near North Shields provide excellent vantage points for viewing the busy river life and shipyards. The best view of the trawler fleets is obtained from near the High Light beacon.

Whitley Bay, 2 miles north of Tynemouth, is Tyneside's most popular seaside resort with fine sandy beaches, impressive hotels, a huge amusement park and facilities for golf, boating, swimming and sea fishing.

There is a pleasant walk along a causeway at the north end of the bay at low tide to St Mary's Island, which has quaint cottages, a lighthouse and small, rocky bays.

Corbridge is an attractive resort on the Tyne, 3 miles east of Hexham and near the Roman town of Corstopitum. St Andrew's Church has a fine Saxon tower and, inside, a Roman arch. A well-preserved example of a pele (peal) tower stands in the churchyard. These Border towers date from the I4th century and provided refuge from bands of marauding Scots.

Hexham is a centre both for visitors exploring the dales of south and west Northumberland and for local farmers. Sheep and cattle are brought from all parts of the North to the stockyards. In addition to Hexham Abbey, there is a 15th-century Moot Hall, or council chamber, and one of the finest open spaces in any town centre at The Seal—originally a monastic enclosure but now a public park.

A fine crypt is all that remains of a church completed in AD 678. A Saxon throne, or frith stool, in the chancel marks the centre of what used to be a circle of medieval sanctuary. It had a radius of a mile, within which fugitives from justice could claim the protection of the Church against civil authority. The church standing now was begun in the i ith century, and a massive staircase in the south transept once led to the monks' dormitory. The ornaments include Bishop Acca's Cross (AD 740).

Morpeth is a busy market town, on a loop of the River Wansbcck, is a gateway to the moors, hills and coast. The town hall was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1714, and an unusual 15th-century clock tower was once the town jail. The clock still strikes the curfew. There are a number of bridges crossing the river, as well as a path formed of stepping-stones, leading to pleasant riverside walks. A huge battlemented tower alongside the main Ai road is often confused b> visitors with the town's Norman castle.
