Yate is a medium sized town sitting to the North of Bristol. Yate is mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086, and St Mary's - the parish church - dates from Norman times. However, through to Medieval times, most of what is now Yate was covered in forest which gave way to farmland. However, in 1844 the railway station opened and started to establish Yate as a town in its own right. Into the 20th century Yate grew rapidly, partly as a commuter town for nearby Bristol. Today Yate's population is around 35,000.
