About Central England

King Alfred the Great defeated the Vikings (the Danes) who had settled in Northern England, against the will of the Anglo-Saxons living there. Then, after the battle, Alfred turned Christian and decided to make peace. The Vikings accepted the offer, planning to wait and recuperate. By 1016, the Danes had taken all of England. Their leader, Sven Forkbeard died at his moment of triumph to be succeeded by Canut Svenson, his son. .

He marries Emma and together they have Hearth Acknut who succeeded his father. In 1042, the son of Ethelread the Unready and Emma, Edward the Confessor ascends the throne. Edward suffered for his religion and survives, hence 'the Confessor'. Godwin, the Earl of Wessex is exiled after his daughter Edith marries Edward. He returns to defeat the king. He is not crowned, but rules untitled. His son, Harold Godwinson becomes the most powerful man in England. When captured in Normandy, Harold signs away his inheritance of the throne to William of Normandy, but with no sincerity. When Edward dies in 1066, Harold declares that Edward's dying wish was to have him on the throne. He is crowned the very next day
