Abinger
A village, in wooded hill country, which still has stocks and a whipping post, a partly-Norman church and many old houses. The nearby hamlet of Abinger Hammer recalls the forge 'hammers' of the 17th-century iron industry. Its village clock has a smith striking a bell; there is still a working smithy, and a tea-room beside watercress beds.

Dorking
The town's High Street follows the route of the Roman Stane Street; the Saxons lived in Dorking and the Danes raided it. Charles Dickens stayed at the 400-year-old White Horse Inn, and the vanished King's Head is said to have been the 'Markis of Granby' in The Pickwick Papers. The hotel at Burford Bridge, i mile north, is where Lord Nelson finally separated from Lady Nelson in 1800, and where Keats, in failing health, completed 'Endymion' in 1818. A lane off the main road just south of the hotel leads to stepping stones across the River Mole and on to the slopes of Box Hill.

Good surrounding open spaces—Esher Common, Arbrook Common and Oxshott Heath—resist the tides of suburban encroachment. Sandown Park Racecourse is just north of the town. There is a good afternoon's ramble round Claremont Woods where rhododendrons fringe a lake set in 50 acres of National Trust land, i mile south of Esher. The grounds were laid out by Capability Brown; the house they adjoin, built by Vanbrugh in 1708 and rebuilt for Clive of India in 1772, is now a school, preserving some fine interior decoration by Holland.
