Climping
A village on the western side of the Arun Estuary, with a hotel built this century in the style of a medieval manor. The village lies a mile inland from one of the rare stretches of undeveloped coastline in Sussex, and paths lead to the sea. There is a 13th-century church.

Birdham
A village on Chichester Harbour, attracting yachtsmen, artists and holiday-makers. Near Birdham, the painter J. M. W. Turner discovered the beauty of Chichester Harbour; his painting of
it is on view in Petworth House. The parish church, built in 1545, has a low, narrow door through which, according to legend, the Devil was kicked out; then the door was blocked up so that he could not get in again.

Bosham
Cottages in soft colours stand on a little peninsula between two tidal creeks, with Quay Meadow at the seaward end. Harold, the Saxon, set out from here in 1064 on the voyage to Normandy which delivered him into the hands of William the Conqueror. The Bayeux Tapestry shows Harold on his way to mass in Bosham Church before the voyage. It was at Bosham that Canute is said to have commanded the tide to roll back.

Boxgrove
A straggling one-street village at the foot of the downs. The big surprise is the magnificent nave of the Priory Church, built between 1170 and 1220. Lord de la Warr, Lord of the Manor, stopped the church being pulled down after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537 and converted it into a parish church.

Chichester
The site of the modern city was a settlement of the Regni tribe before the Romans built their new town of Novio-magus there. After the Romans left, the Saxon chieftain Aella gave the ruined city to his son Cissa, who called it after himself—Cissa's Ceaster or Castle. Viewed from any high point on the downs, Chichester is set amid -fields, coloured woods,glimmering salt marshes and stippled harbour waters, with the thin cathedral spire pointing like a sword to heaven. The cathedral, begun c. 1091 by Bishop Ralph, the Norman, has a nave of soaring beauty. There is a magnificent window in the south transept, and the graceful, tapering spire, 277 ft high, dominates the West Sussex coastal plain. There are noble streets and homely corners of history in the town, a ijth-century market cross, some fine Georgian houses and long stretches of the original Roman wall.

Chilgrove
A charming village in a valley, with a pub by a long green, just off the main road from Chichester to the Hartings. It is a good centre for downland walks, especially southwards to the ridge of Bow Hill, where two concentric ramparts mark the site of an Iron Age hill fort, Goosehill Camp. At Kingley Vale, 2-4 miles south of Chilgrove, there is a striking yew wood which is said to mark the graves of Danes killed in battle.

Cocking
The cottages have woodwork painted in the deep yellow used in all villages run by the Cowdray Estate. There are good walks through downland under Linch Down (813 ft) towards the Hart-ings. The red roofs of Cocking and Midhurst look gay from Cocking Down.

Earnley
A village of the Selsey peninsula, with a 14th-century church. There is a group of thatched flint barns at Marsh Farm, near the beach, and an old windmill at nearby Somerley. Offshore, low spring tides in Bracklesham Bay disclose unusual deposits of slate-coloured clays known as the Bracklesham Beds.
