Hereford

Once the Saxon capital of West Mercia, Hereford is steeped in history. It is not simply a museum piece, however, but very much the administrative and social centre of the county. The city is surrounded by orchards and rich pastures, grazed by herds of red-and-whitc Hereford cattle which provide some of the finest beef in the world. One of the old inns famous for its beef is The Green Dragon, an old posting inn with panelling dating back to 1600.

High Town is the hub of Hereford, with its shops and market hall, and there is access to Broad Street with the cathedral at its south end. The art gallery and museum contains a Bronze Age burial and finds from Iron Age forts and from the Roman town of Magnis, now Kenchester, 52 milts north-west of Hereford.

Hereford Cathedral dates from the 12th century, but has been much altered in later years. It is mainly Norman, but changes through the centuries have left it a mixture of pink sandstone of many periods. The central tower is i4th century, as are the choir stalls. The cathedral contains the internationally famous Mappa Mundi, a map of the world drawn c. 1300. The chained library is the largest of its kind in the world, containing nearly 1500 books, each attached by a chain to rods on the 17th-century oak bookcases. The River Wye flows through the city under a 15th-century six-arched stone bridge, just upstream from the cathedral. Near by, some of the medieval city walls still stand. A tablet in Gwynne Street marks where Nell Gwynne was born.

Madley

A village with some black-and-white houses, with a finely preserved parish church of mixed Norman and Gothic architecture. Its beautiful 14th-century stained glass in the east window is among the finest in Britain, and the present-day vogue for stained glass as an art form is making Madley an artists' shrine. Every June the parishioners hold a music festival in the church. Near by is a 16th-century timbered farmhouse.

Peterchurch

The village has a fine Norman church, and in the hills to the west are the ruins of the medieval castle of Snodhill. To the east of Peterchurch is stone-built Wellbrook Manor. One of the wings dates from the 14th century.

Pontrilas

This hamlet at the southern end of Golden Valley is notable for two interesting houses: Pontrilas Court, which is a 17th-century gabled stone house, and Kentchurch Court, 2 miles south-east, which has been the seat of the Scuda-mores since the nth century; it was remodelled by John Nash in 1795 and has fine 17th-century wood-carving.

Symonds Yat

One of the most beautiful views of the River Wye; the word yat means a gate. The river winds its way through a narrow gorge, swinging round in a great loop for 5 miles, circling Huntsham Hill and then curving back to within a quarter of a mile of its original course. The best view of it is from Yat Rock on the Gloucestershire side of the river.
