London, being the capital city is obviously the centre for music, and inevitably there is a high concentration of some of the best musicians in the country in the area. With the Royal College of music and the Royal Academy of music, the major London orchestras, it has the monopoly for classical music. With all the clubs and theatres, jazz and pop also uncovered. Perhaps the weakest area, when looked at as a percentage of the population, ceilidh bands and barn dance band. Although there are certainly a lot of excellent bands within London, many of them coming from the surrounding counties. I don't know if it's because the mentality of the typical folk musician tends to be more orientated to the countryside and away from the city hustle and bustle? Certainly, in my mind the folk idiom is more connected with small towns, villages and the countryside, but then that's probably a bias simply because I play folk music and my own preference is for the countryside rather than the city. I'm not sure that there is a reason why they should apply to anybody else?
Nevertheless, partly because of the high population density in and around London, and partly because of the long history of religious and nonreligious music in the capital, you can find any kind of live music that you are looking for. The downside for musicians living in London is the astronomical cost of living, so there are certainly more musicians heading into London to play, rather than living in near the centre, but musicians are used to commuting. When one talks about a local musician, what that means very much depends on the part of the country. In the north of England where population density is low, a local band could be anywhere within 70 or 80 miles of the performance venue. In the London area, 70 miles across London could take days to travel (slight exaggeration, but travel certainly is a real pain anywhere around London), so when we are offering bands to play in London, we are very careful to take account of whether travel entails crossing central London or not, whether the M25 has to be used, et cetera. Another consideration is congestion charges, and access to the venue, something that is mostly irrelevant for most of the UK, but is a prime consideration in London.

London has often been described as a 'collection of villages'. This is true both of the city centre, where districts like Soho and Bloomsbury merge into each other yet remain unmistakably themselves, and also of the outer areas, where such places as Hampstead, Highgate, Greenwich and Richmond still keep much of their distinctive character.

Greenwich is a town intimately connected with British sea-power. Near the pier, preserved in a dry dock, is the famous clipper Cutty Sark, launched in 1869; below decks is a collection of ships' figureheads, and paintings and prints of the sea. Close by is berthed Gipsy Moth IV, in which Sir Francis Chichester sailed single-handed round the world in 1966-7.
The Royal Naval College, formerly known as Greenwich Hospital, is a complex of superb buildings, largely designed by Sir Christopher Wren and opened in 1705. They include the Painted Hall, whose walls are decorated to give the illusion that columns support the roof. Behind the college lies the National Maritime Museum, which by means of models, paintings and manuscripts surveys British naval history from Tudor times. The oldest part of the museum is the Queen's House, designed by Inigo Jones for Anne of Denmark, consort of James I. It was completed in 1635, and is the earliest English example of Palladian architecture.
Behind these buildings rises Greenwich Park, which provides a splendid panoramic view of East London. It was laid out for Charles II by Le Notre, landscape gardener to Louis XIV of France and designer of the park and gardens at Versailles. On the summit stands the former Royal Observatory, now part of the Maritime Museum. (The work of the Observatory was transferred in 1950 to Herstmonceux, in Sussex.) A brass strip on the path outside marks the zero meridian of longitude, as recognised by most countries. Near by is the Caird Planetarium, opened in 1965. On the western side of the park are several fine I7thand 18th-century houses, including Ranger's House, once the home of Lord Chesterfield and now used for Sunday evening concerts during the summer. The Greenwich Theatre, which has an art gallery attached, was converted from an old music hall in 1967.

Blackheath is a suburb surrounding an open common, the remnant of heathland once frequented by highwaymen. Here, golf was introduced into England from Scotland by James I in 1008. Grouped about the common are attractive houses, of which the finest example is the Paragon, a crescent of late 18th-century villas connected by colonnades.

Wimbledon is a residential area world-famous for its international tennis championships. The iO45-acre common, on which stands a windmill built in 1817, is a gorse, bracken and tree-covered plateau, excellent for both walking and riding. It is still patrolled by the official conservators. On the south-west corner is the mound of an Iron Age fortification. This is known as Caesar's Camp, although scholars believe it has no connection with the Romans. In summer, model yachts glide across the ponds on the common; in winter there is skating.
On the common's western edge, at Roehampton, lies the Alton Towers estate. Tall blocks of flats are set on wooded slopes, and the estate is considered one of the country's most handsome post-war housing developments.

In Fulham, a street market in North End Road still sells fruit and vegetables in a district once famous for market gardens. Fulham Palace was the private residence of the Bishops of London for more than 1000 years: the site of the old moat surrounding it is now a public garden.

Chiswick is a fashionable place of residence in the 17th and i8th centuries; some of the atmosphere of that period still survives. Chiswick Mall, easily reached on foot from Hammersmith Mall, is a riverside street lined with delightful houses, including Kelmscott House, built c. 1780 and once the home of William Morris, the pre-Raphaelite artist and author, who died there in 1896.
The 17th-century Hogarth's House was for 15 years the summer home of William Hogarth, the artist. Chiswick House, further west, is one of the finest of the smaller aristocratic mansions in London. It was built in 1729 by the 3rd Earl of Burlington, patron of architects. His protege William Kent decorated the rooms and also laid out the gardens.

Five main roads converge at Hammersmith Broadway; but the riverside, only a few hundred yards away, provides a quiet walk right through to Chiswick Mall. The bank opposite is lined with trees, and the towpath itself is dotted with 18th-century houses, inns and boat-houses. Hammersmith Bridge, a suspension bridge built in 1887, shows Victorian lavishness at its most blatant. It has now become a period piece, with its gilt turrets and elaborate decoration.

Bromley is an outer suburb, formerly a market town. The charming red-brick Bromley College—almshouses founded in 1666, has fine wrought-iron gates. Bromley Palace, now a teachers' training college, was the home of the Bishops of Rochester from 967 to 1846. In the High Street a plaque commemorates the site of H. G. Wells birthplace. Sundridge Park, to the northeast, has a golf course and a rambling white mansion built by John Nash.
