St Austell is on the south coast, near Fowey and Mevagissey. Gribbin Head it a nearby promentory which is owned and managed by the National Trust. Gribbin Daymark is on the promontory, a red and white tower which has been on the headland since 1832.
Although there was a church in the area in the 12th century, and a small village in the 16th century, it was the nearby Polgooth Tin Mine which caused the area to grow in the 18th century.
