Houghton le Spring is between Durham and Sunderland, on the A640, although it is in the City of Sunderland. It is in the south of Tyne and Wear, with the North Sea just 5 miles to the east. There are references to the town in the Boldon Book of 1183, and a document dated 1220. The Houghton Feast originates in the 12th century and is a 10 day festival.
The National Trust Penshaw Monument is just a few miles to the north. It is a Greek style monument built in 1844-45 which has been owned by the National Trust since 1939.
