South of Stockton-on-Tees and south west of Middlesborough, Ingleby Barwick is town with a name that means a barley farmstead, whcih could originally have been two separate places. The area has been greatly developed since the 1970s but ther was probably occupation in the Stone Age, evidenced by the discovery of flintwork.
The town is built to the south west side of Thornaby Airfield, which was an RAF aerodrome in use between 1929 and 1958.
